    The Queen’s Birthday Party 2022

    • Venue:Kobe Club, Kitano-cho, Chuo-ku, Kobe

To celebrate her Majesty’s 96th birthday, the Japan-British Society of the Kansai held a party at the Kobe Club.
As the first such celebration for 3 years, this was a particularly special occasion. Although it was the “rainy season”, the weather held up and allowed us to enjoy pre-prandial drinks on the swimming pool lawn, after which we made our way to our seats. Our Chairman, Mr. Araki, opened the proceedings and proposed a toast, and the respective national anthems were performed. The new British Consul General, Carolyn Davidson, who took up her posting last year, gave a speech and was followed by an equally witty and enjoyable address by our guest, His Excellency Tsutomu Himeno, Japanese Ambassador to the Kansai. Music was supplied by the string quartet “FALL QUARTET” from the Hyogo Performing Arts Center, who gave splendid performances of a variety of music, ending with a rousing arrangement of Elgar’s Pomp & Circumstance. This, and the magnificent flower arrangements, lent splendour to the occasion. Since the Covid Pandemic is not yet over, our traditional buffet style was replaced by fixed seating, but at each table there was a chance to enjoy long-postponed reunions. All in all, it was a memorable celebration for this special anniversary of Her Majesty’s 70th year on the throne.

    • Date:Saturday 28th May 2022
    • Destination:Nara Prefecture

After a covid-induced interval of three years, we made an excursion to ancient Nara Prefecture. Oomiwa-Jinja, or MiwaMyoujin (Miwa Shrine) is considered Japan’s oldest shrine, and we had the precious experience of being permitted a full and formal visit and blessing within it. We then proceeded to a restaurant which has revived Nara’s most ancient type of soy sauce, “NIPPONIA Tawaramoto Malt Shoyu”, where we had a lunch employing a variety of local ingredients: a most delicious experience. Finally we proceeded to Haasedera Temple, a National Treasure. It is famous for its tree peonies, but at the time of our visit it was hydrangeas of all sorts and colours that greeted us. Altogether, it was a day of the greatest interest and of revitalizing natural bounty.

    • Venue : British Fair 2020 of Kobe Hankyu

A letter dated 18th July 2018 was delivered to the Secretariat of Japan-British Society to the Kansai. The contents were to ask our cooperation to hold a photo exhibition and to find the real owner of the album. The photographs of the album were found in a builder’s skip with plaster and rubbish the owner of which was totally unknown. The British expats’ lives were preserved vividly by the mono chrome photos. Ms Kelly and Mr Jennings to whom the album was brought, found those very precious and decided to restore by a digital technique. The place they had lived was unknown at the beginning turned to be Kobe by the logo of sports club in the photo. Eventually the both could hold the Exhibition named “FOUND KOBE-JAPAN”.
But unfortunately the owners have not been identified in the U.K. and that’s why they approached to Japan-British Society of the Kansai to hold the Exhibition in Kobe as the second step. Japan-British Society cooperated as a proof of goodwill exchange between Japan and UK. Finally the exhibition was realized as “FOUND KOBE Homecoming Photo Exhibition” at the first UK Fair 2020 of Kobe Hankyu. Unfortunately, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the both could not leave UK this time, instead some JBSK staff gathered the information at the venue to have resulted in various discoveries. After the termination of the epidemic, hopefully this autumn, they plan to come over again to reach in Kobe and to hold the events like the photo exhibition including the photos restored lately and the discoveries.
